  • Cardiff MADE 41 Lochaber Street Cardiff, Wales, CF24 3LS United Kingdom (map)

Hitsuzendo: the Way of the Brush combines mindfulness & art in an exciting & unique workshop for Cardiff. Learn to make ensō - zen circles.

About this Event

Form is Void and Void is Form...

In Zen, ensō (円相 , "circle") is a hand-drawn shape, completed in one definite brushstroke to express a moment when the mind is free to let the body create.

The ensō symbolises among many other ideas Satori, strength, beauty, Universe, and the Great Nothing (Mu). It is characterised by a minimalism born of Japanese aesthetics - wabi-sabi, fukinsei and other areas, which we will touch on during this workshop.

Drawing ensō is a disciplined, creative practice of Japanese ink painting—sumi-e. The tools and mechanics of drawing the ensō are the same as those used in traditional Japanese calligraphy: One uses a brush (筆 fude) to apply ink (sumi) to washi (a thin Japanese paper).

An ensō may appear at first to be simple to draw but only a few Zen masters are known for their excellent ensō.

This is one of the first workshops of it's kind in Cardiff and places are limited. A complete kit is provided as well as refreshments during what promises to be a very enjoyable morning.

**Please wear appropriate clothing as ink can stain**
